OUTFIT//TRUE TOMBOY CHIC

This outfit (to me) is the perfect representation of tomboy chic. My explanation below!

The full look:

What you're looking at is a 3.1 Phillip Lim tee paired with silky Zero Maria Cornejo shorts and a silky Oak bomber.

When dressing up this way - I say to myself it's all about balance. Yes, this look is shorts+ baggy tee + sneakers + bomber... BUT check out the individual elements! All have soft feminine flair.

First the top: it ain't any ol' tee! This one was designed with tucks at both shoulders and at the right hip, to give it some pleating and folds.

Do you see how this design element makes for a softer look overall?

SHOP DRAPED TEES

Now the shorts - SAME DEAL! These shorts have a gorgeous movement to them because A) the fabric is silky and moves when I walk - and B) check out the folds at the outside hem!

You see how it gives for a water-like flow? (Wish I could insert the eyeball emoji right here)

SHOP DRAPED SHORTS

Good draped shorts are hard to come by - these are all pricey but worth the investment!

Before you go dissing my wedge kicks - please know, these are an original pair of Isabel Marant Bobbys... they are a staple, not a trend.

SHOP WEDGE KICKS

The bomber, from Oak, is made of silk and has super soft feel and look. Imagine this with a stiff jacket?

OUTFIT// PENCIL SKIRT + MEN'S SHIRT

You know what time it is - balancing act of a sexy, feminine piece with a bunch of other elements.

The full look:

What you see here is an edgy, yet sexy pencil skirt from Avelon, paired with a men's t-shirt and wedge sneaks.

First the skirt - chosen for it's texture and color. The color and pattern speaks for itself and the feel of the skirt is super spongy. Texture is everything with "simple" looks.

One side white and spotted... one side green and psychedelic. It's good to go with risky pieces when shopping- they pay off. Truly.

Tucked in a men's Vince tee. In my mind bringing boxy to sexy balances the overall vibes.

This jacket is a "non-jacket" jacket. It covers enough to feel substantial, but obviously let's the baby breezes of summer run through!

If I was going for evening, I'd have a hot stiletto popping, but I'm running to production meetings all day honey - you know it's sneaker time.

NEON ACCENTS

Here's a lewk all about a super edgy, shape-shifting, art lady top and neon accents. Enjoy!

First of all, how blousy is this bad boy? Could have been bad, but the fabric and cut make it artful

Neckline... advanced. Movement is just BUILT into the design. You see it?

Knit, neon shorts. What could be wrong?

More neon? Sure! Nike Lunarlons with a built in wedge. All my short girls, you know the drill.

GREY ON GREY AND A SECRET JACKET

Here's a weird outfit that can only be worn in climates like LA where the day starts at 50 degrees, goes up to 70 and then dips back down to 50. Confusing, and also the reason why the rest of the world makes fun of LA.... for outfits like this:

Happy enough, though.

I realized when getting dressed how ridiculous it is to wear shorts, a tee and then a big ass jacket. But then I thought "Go with it sister. Let's just play the ridiculousness up."

T-shirt is MANY sizes too large, which is part of the concept. Oversized for comfort. Suede shorts in May? Totally practical right? Riiigghhhttt.

Then the jacket: an oversized men's bomber style jacket... (with a secret...) keep reading.

The necklaces: a combination of a Zuni fetish necklace, a vintage turquoise find and an Isabel Marant pom necklace.

Picking up where the shorts left off, suede wedges baby.

BONUS: You know the GREY jacket? It's reversible! I love men's clothes that have this practical thinking behind it.

Say what?!?! Now it's black... now it's not!

That'sabowtit.

PICKING WEIRD DIRECTIONAL PIECES PAYS OFF

Listen. Directional pieces are IT. I know you already know but are you practicing it? Alone they punch up an ordinary outfit. The more you mash them together, to more forward you might look. Or you could look a mess, but that's edgy right??

Here's my case study of items that I could have easily talked myself out of at the store, but am glad I didn't!

First the jacket: it's puffy, printed, and has random pockets. Holding this thing in the store, you might say to yourself "this ain't wearable!"

Second: the top.  It's yellow, printed in the front, all black in the back and looks too "specific" to go with anything.

Third: the sneakers are all black from the front but have an ombre effect toward a neon green back. At the store I could have said "who the F wears a neon green sneaker?"  and put them down.

PS - tied a sheer button up around my waist for movement and softness.

The safe way to wear any of these elements would be alone -but the mash up works. There's a relationship between it all. The print on print. The yellow with green...
