OUTFIT// ALL RED AND READY

Sometimes when getting dressed-I give myself little style challenges that could result in my looking ridiculous. Went in the closet today and my inner self said "how many different reds can I put together without looking like a clown?"

Prepare for a total assault of your eyes with the color red!

Full look:

What you see here are THE SICKEST red leather trousers paired with a barely there tank and silky button up shirt.

First the pant! These are Isabel Marant trousers (bought on super sale) and cut to style perfection! My heart dropped to my feet when I saw them.

Check the slouchy fit, jogger style waist band, the sporty piping down the seam AND the cropped perfectly at the ankle hem!

SHOP LEATHER AND FAUX LEATHER PANTS

Say what you want - but Isabel knows how to make women look cool. Factola of life-o-la.

The tank is simple - bright red and paired with an equal in weight button up. Bringing looseness to the look.

So what do you think? Clown or no clown?

A LITTLE STYLE MATHEMATICS

Here's my math equation: if you wear several pieces that don't go together (with good taste and fit, of course) eventually it'll all cancel each other out. Is it true in all cases? Probably not. Is it true in this case? You be the judge!

Full look:

What you're seeing here is a SUPER boxy (and wrinkled) men's t-shirt worn with silk pants, Air max sneaks and a mixed fabric moto jacket.... woof.

This tee wouldn't normally be paired with these pants. It's large, cotton and not particularly chic on it's own. But methinks the tee makes the pants more wearable and casual. Silk Pant + Tee = cancel out the fancy.

A little front tuck, juuuuust in the front.

Could have gone with a heel - but picking up the pink in the print and mirroring it in the kicks.

Jacket time - Check the leather sleeves and varsity moment at the cuff and hem. It's a good moment, baby.

The prints have ZERO to do with each other... but they're canceling each other out as if to say "we aren't two different prints mashed together. No! We are all one print."

What do you think about this combo?

CHIC-AFY YOUR SPORTS TEES WITH ELEVATED BASICS

Long title for a simple concept. But here's an idea! Take your sports tees that have some sort of value, (vintage, kitsch, sentimental) and make them wearable outside of "game day" by pairing them with chic separates.

What you see here is a vintage Yankees tee paired with a silk pant, navy blazer and cardigan.

Start here: your fave sports tee that has SOME design element to it. In this case graphic logo.

Wear with an elevated pant. NOT your jeans, not your shorts! Find a lovely trouser to wear it with. I went with a silk pant in the same color family with beautiful pleating and movement.

Hook it up with a sloppy tuck. We want to see the trouser for what it is, but not take the look too seriously.

And now to add some shape and even more polish... grab your trusty blazer.

Final move - throw your coat over it. I'm bringing back the sporty theme here with a sporty but fancy version of a cardigan.

And that's it! My thinking is you should be able to wear what you want to wear, both casual or fancy by mixing it with the appropriate balancing pieces. What say you? Is this something you would try?

PICKING THE RIGHT BASICS :: HIGH WAISTED PANTS + CREAM SWEATER

Years ago, when I ditched all my clothes and rebuilt my wardrobe, I had days like today in mind. I knew I needed basics BUT promised myself, that I would only buy things that SPOKE TO ME.

This strategy meant that every time I went into my closet, I would only be surrounded by clothing that inspired or said something about my taste, even when I have to dress outside of my comfort zone.

STAPLES WORN : high-waisted black pant, cream sweater, black pumps, trench.

SWEATER: went with texture and dimension. Basic doesn't have to lack personality.

PANTS: something more architectural, wrapping around the waist with pleats.

PUMPS: picked a basic black pointy toe pump (from the front) but has a wooden heel!

TRENCH: this one is a classic. Probably the most traditional thing I own.

And now to conquer the world - one meeting at a time!

5 WORDS: GREEN. SUEDE. DROP CROTCH. PANTS

Comfort zone: slightly masculine pants, fresh sneakers or high heels, fierce coat, monochrome. DUNZO.

Favorite pants in the world, these photos do no justice...

Vanessa, are you really wearing those sneakers again? Yes, I am. I might wear them everyday. Also they're a metallic, which technically means they mix well with everything. I said technically.

Opportunity to show personality. Take it.
